Soil bioengineering techniques for Mediterranean coastal dune restoration using autochthonous vegetation species

چکیده

Abstract Coastal dunes are extremely fragile and threatened ecotones, which play a key environmental role in terms of functional connection between terrestrial marine ecosystems. To counteract the hydrogeological vulnerability coastal risk areas, reliance can be made on soil bioengineering techniques, consisting planting native species combination with natural inert materials. These interventions involve use typical Mediterranean plant species, fundamental for increasing surface protection as well their ecologic function dune consolidation. Monitoring studies growth parameters useful to assess suitability different used works. Hence, this study aimed (i) identify some herbaceous shrubby interventions, (ii) evaluate propagation methods short-term parameters, (iii) provide insights into field management strategies before after transplanting. Juniperus phoenicea L., macrocarpa Sm., Pistacia lentiscus Tamarix africana Poir. gallica L. were selected shrubs while Ammophila arenaria (L.) Link, Sporobolus pungens (Schreb.) Kunth., Agropyron junceum P. Beauv., Eryngium maritimum Calystegia soldanella R. Br., Pancratium species. As shrubs, seeds cuttings proved best an efficiency up 90%. Agamic methods, other hand, most efficient (80–90%) After transplantation, all showed adaptation period new climatic edaphic conditions. In particular, was found withered presence radical shoots.

Using Long-Term Census Data to Inform Restoration Methods for Coastal Dune Vegetation

Barrier islands are exposed to the wind and wave action from storms, which often disturbs both the geomorphology and vegetation. Conservation and restoration efforts for these important habitats could be improved with knowledge of how native plants respond to storms. We analyzed 10 years of annual data of vegetation of St. George Island, Florida, in the Gulf of Mexico, to quantify how the plant...

Genesis of coastal dune fields with vegetation

Vegetation greatly affects the formation and dynamics of dune fields in coastal areas. In the present work, we use dune modelling in order to investigate the genesis and early development stages of costal dune fields in the presence of vegetation. The model, which consists of a set of coupled equations for the turbulent wind field over the landscape, the saltation flux and the growth of vegetat...

Soil seed banks, habitat heterogeneity, and regeneration strategies in a Mediterranean coastal sand dune

This study investigated the effects of microhabitat characteristics on soil seed bank structure, regeneration strategies, and plant composition in a Mediterranean coastal sand dune in Israel. Three different microhabitats were selected: (a) open patches between shrubs, (b) shrub understorey, and (c) open, disturbed patches in pedestrian trails. In each microhabitat two types of sampling plots w...

The effect of microhabitats on vegetation and its relationships with seedlings and soil seed bank in a Mediterranean coastal sand dune community

We examined species composition and diversity of vegetation and soil seed bank associated with different microhabitats in Mediterranean semiarid sand dune community, to identify which functional groups or species benefit from trampling, and to provide a basis for management. In this community microhabitats were found to significantly influence species abundance and biomass of dominant functiona...

Vegetation against dune mobility.

Vegetation is the most common and most reliable stabilizer of loose soil or sand. This ancient technique is for the first time cast into a set of equations of motion describing the competition between aeolian sand transport and vegetation growth. Our set of equations is then applied to study quantitatively the transition between barchans and parabolic dunes driven by the dimensionless fixation ...
